Many British Columbians are experiencing an issue with their ICBC-issued licence plates: they are delaminating.

Plate delamination can manifest in several ways, including:

Discoloration, Bubbling, and Splitting

Complete Delamination or Peeling

Bubbling and Flaking

Metal Exposure and Separation of Layer from Metal

So, what can I do about this?

When we can sight your plates to ensure they are indeed delaminating, we can issue a plate replacement to you for free, waiving the usual $18 replacement fee due to your plates being defective.

The following points should be noted, however:

  • You must replace both license plates even if only one is delaminating
  • Your new plates will not be copies of your old ones
  • You will need to surrender both of your old license plates
  • All registered owners must sign for the plate replacement

What happens if I leave my plates as they are?

If your license plates are delaminating in a way that obstructs the legibility of any of the numbers or letters on the plates, you may receive a fine from a police officer for failure to display.
